News & Notes - 1/27/11

Just a couple of quick notes today, as follows:

1)  MASTER ALUMNI LIST -- One of the things that the undergraduate chapter house would like to do is to update their Master List, which is WAY more comprehensive than the Old Bro Network list.  I've attached their Master List spreadsheet to an e-mail sent out today, and am requesting that all of you Old Bro's out there help them out a bit by checking to see if they have up to date information on YOU, and if not, sending them a note so they can update the Master List and keep tabs on wherever the hell we have scattered to.

Take a minute to scroll down the list, it's organized by zeta number, find your info and if it needs to be updated, send an e-mail with the correct info to Max Henderson, who is the current High Rho (Alumni Relations) at the chapter house.  Max's e-mail address is

All of the New Bro's at the chapter house are excited to be Lambda Chi's at UCLA, and this is one small way us Old Bro's can support their efforts.

2)  LAMBDA CHI ALUMNI POKER NIGHT -- This is another local alumni event that I was made aware of by Tom Larson (EpSig 612) and is being organized by our crosstown rivals at USC.  The event is being scheduled for April 1st at the Zeta Delta Chapter house, 720 W. 28th St., Los Angeles.  If you are interested in taking away some of their money they might otherwise use to buy more football recruits, contact the Chapter Advisor Eddie Yen at  I'm assuming it's open to any local Lambda Chi alums regardless of chapter affiliation.  Just remember the immortal words of Tuck Meador -- "All I need in order to win is a chip and a chair".  Good luck to all who participate ……

3)  Next week I'll get back to adding some more new Old Bro's to the roster, right now I have contact info on a few more brave souls to add to the ranks, and might be processing a couple more in the next few days.  Stay tuned …..

Alumni Wine Tasting Event - Feb. 13

Forwarding along this e-mail I received, here's an official Lambda Chi Alpha Alumni Event happening on 2/13, just in case your social calendar has an open spot in between the Super Bowl on 2/6 and the Daytona 500 on 2/20 ...... Cheers, MJH

Orange County Alumni Event - Wine Tasting
Cabernet is King
Dear Brother Harness,

On January 11th, 61 alumni brothers and guests enjoyed socializing and hearing an update on the General Fraternity at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. The LA-Orange County Alumni Association is pleased to invite you to attend the February alumni event in Orange.

Many will tell you that, in the world of wine, 'Cabernet is king.' On Sunday, February 13, we cordially invite the alumni brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha and their ladies to join us to explore a selection of exciting Cabernets. The presentation will mainly focus on examples from Napa Valley, but we'll also have some intriguing things from other appellations (and countries) for comparison as well. We'll lay out about a dozen wines along with appropriate cheeses and bread. The event will be at Wine Exchange in the city of Orange from 3-5PM, cost will be $39 per person, advanced reservations recommended. Please RSVP with Wine Exchange Owner, Brother Steve Zanotti (USC '73) at (714) 974-1454. You may also e-mail to reserve your spot by credit card. Mark your calendars and call your bro's!

Wine Exchange
1500 E Village Way #2365 (Tustin & Heim)
Orange, CA.

Wine Exchange ( has been around since 1982 and completed the wine tasting portion of the store where the event will be held, called Uncorked, just last year. They have produced over 1000 wine events both small and large in their history. But the intent here is to create a casual environment that is open to both connoisseurs and novices alike. You can taste one wine, or try them all, along with appropriate breads and cheeses. It can be as much or as little about the wine as you choose to make it; the one difference here is that we are all linked through fraternity

New Old Bro's + Updates - January 21, 2011

The Old Bro Network has had another good week, adding SEVEN more Old Bro's to the ranks while also receiving an update for ONE Old Bro.

First up, Gary Messerotes earns a "Stud of the Week" mention for forwarding contact info on BOTH John Kohler (EpSig 640) and Drew Kohler (EpSig 692).  Mezzo also updated his contact info with his cell number, their new & updated info has been added to the list.

Batting second in this week's lineup, Mike Feinberg gets a "Stud of the Week" mention by forwarding contact info on the pride of New York, Ray Schwartz (EpSig 689).  Please welcome Ray Ray to the group.

Batting third, Bill Schlichter earns his SECOND "Stud of the Week" mention by forwarding contact info on the Old Bro who preceded me as the shortstop on the world class Lambda Chi intramural softball team ….. Jack Power (EpSig 667) !!  By the way, Jack was WAY better at shortstop than I ever was.

And in the cleanup spot, the Old Bro Network is humbled to announce the presence of THE MAN ……….. THE MYTH ……… THE LEGEND ………. none other than EpSig 632 himself ……….. Doug Ledsam !!  Doug & Allyson still live down in the San Diego area, send him a note if you'd like to say howdy or whatever.

Next, Mark Gordon (EpSig 833) contacted me through Facebook this week ….. many of you Old Bro's are registered on Facebook, and if you are connected with other bro's who are currently NOT part of our little network here, let them know about it, have them contact me and I'll get them added to the roster.

And finally, we have a new leader in the clubhouse for the Old Bro "farthest distance away from a pitburger" title, checking in from over 8,400 miles and 12 time zones away, the Deputy Chief of Mission for the U.S. Embassy in Oman (pretty snazzy title, don't you think) ……… we all know him simply as EpSig 682 ……… Vic Hurtado !!

New and updated e-cards have been e-mailed to everyone, and the website lists have been updated as well.

As usual, if you have any contact info for Old Bro's NOT already on the list, send it to me and I'll get them added to the group.  Or, if I managed to screw up anyone's info somehow (hey ….. shit happens) send me the correct info and I'll fix that too.

Keep up the great work, Old Bro's ….. our roster count now stands at 88, and we are closing in fast on 100 !!  Who do YOU think will be the celebrated 100th Old Bro ??  Should we hold a "100 Club" party in his honor and see if he makes it all the way through without relieving himself to win the coveted "Iron Bladder Award" ??  Stay tuned …..

Mike Mullins Memorial Service - December 12, 2010

(Previously e-mailed on 12/17/10)

On December 12, 2010, approx. 30 members of Epsilon Sigma Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha gathered to pay their respects along with family and friends at a memorial service for our fraternity brother Mike Mullins (EpSig 717), who lost his battle with brain cancer on Thanksgiving Day.

Mike's brother-in-law, Pastor Bucky Dennis of the Pathways Church, presided over a moving service that included a slideshow of photos of Mike throughout his life, and remembrances from Mike's immediate family members about a man whose life was filled with strength, grace, humility, and love.

When Pastor Dennis asked if anyone else in attendance might want to say a few words, Brother Dave Adelman strode to the front of the room and admitted to being one of the culprits who MAY have caused Mike's GPA to suffer a bit during his college years.

Dave then invited all the other Lambda Chi's in attendance to join him in front of the room to pay tribute to Mike's memory.  We tried to sing "We're All Good Brothers", botched it up pretty good, then brothers Len Poirier, Lee Troxler, and Jim Richards rescued us by speaking poignantly about Mike and his impact on us all.

After the service concluded, many of the brothers in attendance gathered at the nearby Lazy Dog Cafe to continue reminiscing about Mike and about all the good times we had back in the day.  Many old stories were told, many old friendships were rekindled, and I am sure that Mike was looking down on us and enjoying every minute of it as well ...... Rest In Peace, Mike.

Photo was taken on October 2, 2010, at a gathering for Mike at John Horwitz's home in Santa Ana.  Mike's on the left, Dave Shapiro (EpSig 760) on the right.

LinkedIn group for EpSig's

(previously e-mailed on 12/16/10)

I know of several old bro's out there that currently participate in the social network for business known as LinkedIn.  For the rest of you Neanderthals, LinkedIn is an online service that allows you the ability to "connect" and exchange contact info with and about people you do business with in your professional lives. LinkedIn currently has over 80 million members and its membership is growing at the rate of a new member EVERY SECOND.

One of the features of LinkedIn is that members can join into or create their own Groups, in order to facilitate the sharing of professional info in a narrower niche than the entire 80 million strong database.  It is with this feature in mind that Old Bro Mike Cummings (EpSig 649) has created a group within LinkedIn for Lambda Chi's from UCLA.  Click on the link below for more info about it …..

Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity - Epsilon Sigma Zeta Alumni

In order to join this group, you must first be a member of LinkedIn.  A basic membership is FREE, go to if you're interested, follow the simple instructions and faster than you can hum the tune to "Mary Sue Barnes" ….. you are now LinkedIn !!

Some of the old bro's I know of using LinkedIn are VERY well connected in their professional lives.  Of the eighteen old bro's I'm connected with on LinkedIn, half of them have 100+ connections, a few have 200+ connections, and the title of MOST well connected old bro goes to Dave Adelman, who has 500+ connections.

Aside from Adelman and Cummings, other old bro's who I know are on LinkedIn are Mike Benavente, Vic Caldwell, Chuck Campbell, Bob Craig, Kirk Feldman, Ron Jackson, Jim Kaldem, Mike LaCroix, John Lopez, Terry Maroney, Larry Mazzeo, Pat Murray, Gary Schwary, Nick Svetcoff, Lee Troxler, and John Woodlock.  I'm sure there are others out there, and I encourage all of you to join Mike's group and connect with the other old bro's on the site.  It can be a valuable tool in your professional lives.

Cheers, MJH
